NICU Registered Nurse – NovaVita - Specialized Paediatric Hospital

JOB SPECIFICATION The Registered Nurse will undertake duties and responsibilities nurse as defined by the Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) Scope of Practice for the Registered Nurse and as outlined in the NovaVita Specialized Paediatric Hospital (NSPH) Policies and Procedures. Infant Care Responsibilities: •Acting as a Registered Nurse, to maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing •To ensure and maintain correct identification of infants according to Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) standards during communication, procedures and cares •To admit infants according to NSPH admission criteria and ensure assessment of infant is completed within 24 hours of admission as per JCIA standard •To commence discharge planning upon admission •To co-ordinate the infant’s discharge arrangements in accordance with NSPH Discharge Policy and communicating infant discharge needs to discharge planner •To promote an infant focused holistic approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals within the multi-disciplinary team •Ensure continuity of nursing care is in accordance to the latest evidence base practise •To educate infants’ parents and caregivers on cares and procedures that are relevant to the infant’s condition •To provide information to parents and caregivers which enables them to make choices about adopting a healthy lifestyle for their infant •To complete infant documentation correctly, appropriately and in a timely manner •To maintain a safe ward environment and identify, report and initiate interventions to correct and/or improve on risks identified •To ensure infants pain is assessed, managed and documented within a timely manner and monitored to facilitate a pain free experience •To assist in establishing and monitoring protocols and/or clinical care pathways •To participate in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication of infant affairs such as critical results, handover and infants’, including parents of infants, concerns during multi-disciplinary rounds. •To ensure that parents or caregivers are aware of, understands and signs, infants’ rights and responsibilities •To coordinate a translator to parents or caregivers to facilitate communication •To ensure and maintain infant confidentiality, this includes no photography of infants and family members unless written and signed consent is obtained on admission •To educate the parents, caregivers and visitors regarding infection control protocols that need to be adhered to and maintained e.g. hand hygiene •Works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team providing valuable quality infant information, both clinically and administratively, with colleagues and peers •To provide an environment which is supportive of developmental and neurological care and wellbeing of the infant. •To orientate parents and caregivers of facility, equipment and routine •To be proactive in continuous improvement of processes in the assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of the infant’s care •To be competent in nursing critically ill babies on ventilator support including CPAP •To be competent and aware of using and maintaining equipment in the critical area •To be competent in practising critical thinking skills •To be competent in identifying signs and symptoms of a deteriorating patient and intervening in an efficient and effective way. •To be competent in blood gas values and the interpretation thereof Professional Development and Education Responsibilities: •To ensure nursing license from home country is current and valid at all times •To develop own teaching skills and participate in staff/student education programmes •To help maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as a facilitator in the supervision and teaching of less experienced staff. •To attend orientation programmes, in-service training and mandatory training sessions. •To be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness in accordance with HAAD requirements and to maintain a professional portfolio with evidence of reflective practice. •To ensure that HAAD requirements of CME hours are met for renewal of HAAD license •To contribute to annual appraisal and be responsible for own Personal Development Programme •To participate in a programme of clinical supervision •To assist in the development and implementation of nursing practice guidelines, standards and policies •To assist in the training and development of Practical Nurses and complete preceptors training as required •To maintain and update core-competencies Research and Development Responsibilities: •To assist in promoting nursing practice in line with relevant research •To maintain an awareness of evidence-based practice •To contribute to research and development programs within NSPH •To identify own training needs, to ensure individual is informed and competent in the use of all equipment provided for use Audit, Quality and Risk Management Responsibilities: •To contribute to the setting and monitoring of measurable standards of care and be accountable for maintaining standards •To adhere to all infection control protocols and documentation that will facilitate prevention of infections •To maintain awareness of HAAD standards and local quality issues relevant to the delivery of nursing services, e.g. Clinical Governance •To uphold quality initiatives that improve ‘customer care’ and enhance the interface between staff, infants and visitors •To participate in the audit process for monitoring and reviewing nursing quality according to the NSPH policy; including sentinel events, near-misses, medication errors and incident reports •To be aware of personal responsibilities in relation to the maintenance of a safe environment and identification of potential risks for all personnel, infants and visitors, taking action as and when required •To be aware of the role of the nurse in handling infant (including parents) satisfaction in accordance with NSPH policy •To set alarms limits of medical equipment relevant to the infant’s condition, respond immediately to alarms and not to disarm and/or ignore alarms Resource Management Responsibilities: •To develop and maintain an awareness of budgeting, exercising care and economy in the ordering of consumables and provide feedback on quality and effectiveness •To be knowledgeable of staff allocation and infant acuity •To work in accordance with the NSPH Strategy, which includes the vision and mission, and contribute towards achieving its aims and objectives Operational Responsibilities: •Responsible for applying the nursing process to effective and quality infant care •Acts as an infant advocate •Understanding of cultural customs and religious beliefs of infants and their families •Utilizes professional material resources effectively •Ensures that infant care is performed professionally in accordance with established NSPH policies and procedures as per the international standards and code of ethics •Act competently, loyally and in a trustworthy manner in accordance with the NSPH’s best interests •Maintain infant, family and employee confidentiality at all times •Responsible for the evaluation of the care process •Undertakes additional tasks as
