College Profile

The College of Arts and Sciences CAS houses twelve departments covering a wide range of undergraduate specializations in the Arts and Sciences including English Literature amp Linguistics and Arabic Languages History Sociology Social Work International Affairs Mass Communication Psychology Policy Planning amp Development Statistics Chemistry Biological Sciences Environmental Sciences Public Health Biomedical Sciences Material Science Sports Science and Human Nutrition. The College also houses five Master Programs which are in Environmental Sciences Biomedical Sciences Gulf Studies Material Science and Arabic Language. In Fall 2013 CAS launched a PhD in Biological and Environmental Sciences. Additionally the College offers a Program of Arabic for Non Native Speakers. Also the newly established three research centers namely Center for Social Science and Humanities Center for Sustainable Development and Gulf Studies Center.

It is worth mentioning that as members of QU CAS faculty members have excellent opportunities to secure intramural and extramural funding for their research ideas. Qatar National Research Fund QNRF is major source of research funding with individual project funding limit exceeding 1 millionproject 5 million exceptional projects along with student research funding programs. As the national and largest University in the country Qatar University is the recipient of most of QNRF awards with many research active faculty members able to win multiple grants.

Duties amp Responsibilities

The College of Arts amp Sciences invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of the Department of English Literature and Linguistics at a rank of Associate orFull Professor. A Ph.D. in Linguistics or English Literature is required. The Department of English Literature and Linguistics currently offers one program with two concentration areas Literature and Linguistics. A Minor in Translation is also offered from the Department. The College seeks a dynamic scholar with an outstanding academic background strong research credentials demonstrated leadership skills and experience in mentoring faculty a strong commitment to education with a track record in innovative learningcentered teaching and proven management skills. The candidate is required to have proficiency in English and knowledge of Arabic is preferred.

Appointment will be for a full time position as Head of Department on a threeyear renewable contract. The deadline for application is April 30 2014. Employment is expected to begin in September 2014 but a later start date could be negotiated. Qualifications

Candidates will be considered for the position on the basis of the following qualifications

1. Ph.D. in English Literature or Linguistics with a distinguished record of refereed publications and a demonstrated excellence in teaching at established international universities or higher education institutions

2. Demonstrated competence in academic administration and budget management.

3. Ability to develop existing programs in the department to effectively meet international academic standards

4. Effective leadership and team building skills
