JOB OVERVIEW Department: Whole College Reports to: College Leadership Team Must liaise with: Teaching Colleagues, Head of Learning Support, Admissions Effective Date: August 2016 Location: Cairo, Egypt Job Type: Full-Time PERSON SPECIFICATION Education – Graduate qualified teacher, Bachelors degree in relevant subject area Experience – Experience successfully running an EAL department and in working with students in the relevant age group. Experience in an international school is preferred but not essential. Experience of the British education system is preferred but not essential. Experience in raising achievement and setting aspirational targets is essential. Skills – Excellent leadership and administrative skills. Ability to analyse student data and promote student achievement. An understanding of how the learning continuum flows through the College. Able to use educational ICT to promote learning. Excellent knowledge of curriculum content and pedagogy. Proficient in using a variety of assessment and feedback techniques. Personal attributes – An exemplary practitioner who leads by example. Commitment to uphold and support the schools ethos. Commitment to supporting all aspects of our programme including extra-curricular activities and contribution to school community. OVERVIEW OF ROLE: The Head of English as an Additional Language is responsible to the for the day to day operation of the school’s EAL policy and the day to day management and organisation of the EAL Team. They also have to liaise closely with the Head of Learning Support. Delegation of some specific responsibilities to other members of the EAL Team may be desirable; however the Head of EAL is expected to oversee the development and implementation of EAL planning, teaching and support programmes. MAIN DUTIES: Specific responsibilities are as follows: • Coordinating provision for children with EAL needs. • Maintaining the school’s EAL register and overseeing the records on all pupils with EAL needs. • Ensuring liaison with Heads of School, specialist teachers, class teachers and tutors. • Advising and supporting teachers in respect of children with EAL needs. • Coordinating special arrangements for examinations as appropriate. • Ensuring liaison with parents and with external professionals as appropriate. • Liaising with the Admissions Team to ensure that there are appropriate resources to meet the needs of potential students. • Interviewing and assessing potential students. • Coordination of arrangements for new students. • Reporting to the College Leadership Team as appropriate. Promoting high standards of teaching and learning for students with EAL by: • Ensuring that EAL staff and resources are deployed appropriately and effectively. • Overseeing planning, teaching, assessment, and recording of pupil’s development and ensuring that ‘tracking’ documents are kept up to date. • Keeping all staff informed of recent developments and best practices in EAL teaching. • Implementing and facilitating an ongoing programme of professional review and development for staff within the EAL Team. • Contributing to in-service training of college staff. • Emphasising an awareness of ‘value added’ in all aspects of the department’s day to day work and record keeping.
