Country Representative Ashoka Arab World Terms of Reference Background: Ashoka is the global association of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs—men and women with system changing solutions for the world’s most urgent social problems. Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. From its regional office in Cairo, Ashoka Arab World creates a competitive, entrepreneurial, and globally integrated citizen sector and develops the profession of social entrepreneurship. Ashoka currently works with 82 Ashoka Fellows located in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Kuwait, Tunisia, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Position Title: Country Representative Reports To: Ashoka Regional Director/Diamond Leader Employment: Full time, at least one year commitment. Office hours: 9 am to 5 pm (unless assigned to stay later fulfilling work requirements) Working days: Sunday through Thursday, with weekends on Friday and Saturday. Work-related obligations sometimes require weekend attendance. Duties and Responsibilities: The role of the Country Representative (CR) is to work closely with the Regional Director (RD) by serving as the functional and operational head of the Egypt office. These tasks range from the short and long term mechanics and logistics of running the office to ensure the implementation of larger strategy, objectives, policies and procedures. The Country Representative needs to be a highly innovative and creative individual, who is able to lead, manage and co-create with a team of Changemakers (Ashoka Arab World staff responsible for programs and operations within Egypt). S/he must be someone who thrives within a diverse environment and interacts well with people of different backgrounds, able to cultivate strong professional relationships with AAW staff, partners, donors, Fellows and other stakeholders. Flexibility, a proactive mindset and a demonstrable ability to effect positive change are all key to this position. This is a very important position, requiring excellent entrepreneurial, managerial and leadership skills. The successful candidate must be willing to work long hours when needed and to be physically present in the Cairo office from Sunday – Thursday, 9am – 5pm (sometimes these hours will increase). In conjunction with the RD, the CR will supervise and oversee all Ashoka Egypt programs. These include, but will not be limited to Venture (search and selection of Ashoka Arab World Fellows), Fellowship, Media and Marketing, Internship and Volunteering. The CR will be responsible for ensuring that Ashoka Egypt meets all objectives set up for each fiscal year as well as implementation of the action plan, fulfillment of all targets and deliverables. The CR will communicate with the Program Officers on a regular basis to ensure that the office is on track with regards to final deliverables. In addition to the above mentioned activities, the CR will contribute to other activities such as partnership building. The Country Rep will work with the RD and Development Officer to reach out to potential donors, utilizing using his/her contacts to expand Ashoka’s support network. In addition to expanding AAW’s base of donors, nominators and supporters, the CR will assist the RD in maintaining and strengthening AAW’s relationships with such contacts. The CR will be responsible for fundraising in Egypt and all partnership building should contribute to that aim, either directly or indirectly. Key to the fulfillment of these requirements will be the development of a strategic approach to the fulfillment of Ashoka Arab World’s goals and objectives. The Country Rep will work very closely with the Regional Director to determine these goals and will design a strategy, based on consultations with the RD and all relevant departments. With the RD’s approval, the CR will then take the lead in implementing this strategy. The CR will oversee all country-based operations and activities for the Ashoka Arab World office. This includes operations, finance, IT, Venture and Fellowship, Media and Marketing, Projects (Street Children and Education Collaborative Platforms) and the Sahteen Project (Ashoka Arab World partnership with Danone). S/he will manage the day-to-day running of these departments and ensure that they are contributing to the overall objectives of the AAW office and meeting all targets and deliverables. The CR will work closely with, but will not oversee or manage, the Development team (responsible for fundraising and corporate partnerships – especially in a global/international capacity) and the Partnership and Communication Officer (responsible for high-level communication and non-financial partnerships), both of whom report directly to the Regional Director. The CR will lead the AAW office on the RD’s behalf and under her supervision and guidance, through representation at public events (when appropriate), by overseeing the daily operations of the office and ensuring that all deadlines are met and by ensuring that staff members meet regularly, to ensure unity and coherence within the office, and receive regular feedback on their work, for continued progress and development. A successful candidate must be extremely flexible, have the ability to work and multi-task in a fast paced environment, and be entrepreneurial. The CR must have started one or more initiatives of his/her own, as we seek evidence of a highly entrepreneurial personality. S/he must also have significant experience of managing teams of people and organizations (please note that this is different from project management and we do not seek a Project Manager for this role). We will be looking for evidence that the CR has developed strategic plans with a budget of at least 1 million dollars and managed a team of at least ten people. The CR must also be able to work within both business and social sectors. The ideal CR candidate would demonstrate the ability to take the initiative and be a strong leader, but also the flexibility to be open to new ideas and approaches, particularly as all decisions are the ultimate responsibility of the RD and subject to her approval. Performance management i. Together with her/his supervisor, the Country Rep will develop a performance agreement at the beginning of her/his term. This agreement will include goals, measures and expected results and will be the baseline for the performance review to take place after the first six months and the end of the year. ii.
